Do you think that nokia is taking it seriusly with software updates or is it just an illusion of mine? I’m waiting to see which nokia will be getting full flash support and might get it.

Installed last night. Great homescreen, nice to finally have Kinetic scrolling – especially with a 16gb card full of music!

Ovi maps landscape support is a nice touch too.

Just updated to the new firmware (product code RM-356), had issues initially after restoration of text messages after the update. as soon as i restored the text messages, the home screen in contacts bar settings would not function as all the icons including charging bar and signal bar would disappear and the phone would slow down totally leaving no option but to restart the phone. Worked well in Basic and Shortcut Bar home screen but only after the restart.

looks like some kind of a compatibility problem. I’ve restored everything except text messages, working great now. I like the feel of kinetic and new home screen.

My phone says that no new update is available. Any idea whether this update is available in India?

@Manish – it all depends on the factory build of your phone. We’re still waiting for our update too, which is a little frustrating as we want to get our hands on it too!

Has the V40 update been withdrawn? I have a generic UK black 0573730, upgraded two days ago to V40 via NSU and now checking the Nokia website, it shows only V31 as being available.

Hey got updated to V40 last night.The look and feel is good with some attractive UI, but presently not able to receive calls as it gets hung up whenever i try to accept a call.. so the basic feature of a phone is lost. The home screen has some enhanced graphics whenever there is an incoming call. supposed to touch a GREEN arrow to accept call.As soon as i do that te call gets cut and phone restarts.
Sadly i am moving back to my previous version as of now.

Managed to update the firmware last nite … now still struggling to get use to the kinetic scrolling and new homescreen. Major differences from the previous firmware this v40 … for example, alarm … i can’t get it to stop buzzing once the alarm went off this morning. Also, taking a call when the phone is locked was a real challenge. A couple of time, i got a missed called due to unable to take the call …

@Salman. Nokia sends out its updates by factory code rather than by area or region – so your friend with the same phone next door may get an update ahead of you – it’s not the greatest system in the world but the update will rollout eventually.

@khan: try to remove your memory card and then start your phone.. it should work.. if it works then format your memory card from PC. and ya take backup of all stuffs… bye..

Does v40 support Chinese word? Just worry it support only western languages…

Upgraded my 5800 last week, and now i think i have found an issue with the software.

I can’t play videos longer than about 3 minutes. Clips i have on the memory card which played just fine with earlier versions (20, 21 and 31). The moving image freeze about 3-4 minutes in to the video, audio playback continues.

Anyone else seen this?

To update to version 40.0.05 you need to connect phone to PC and go through Nokia PC Suite, not available through the air yet.

This is very no good. Nokia should follow due process when they make a Global announcement that the new Map and free Navigate is possible on all their models 5800 XM included. But when I am checking I am finding that the Software Update is not available which is greater than 31.0.008 to make Free Navigation to work and this update is not yet released for India.

You can just download Nokia Software Updater to update your phone firmware into 40.0.005.
The latest NSU can be found in Nokia Europe download or via below url :

Then choose your mobile model like Nokia 5800 and you will be directed on NSU download with type of new updated firmware.

With NSU, you can update your device’s firmware into the latest by connecting your phone via usb cable into your computer/laptop. It’s easier than updating using your mobile phone because its size is great as about 144 Mb and you can download it using your computer/laptop as well as installing into your phone.

If problem still occurred, it might be from Nokia server that failed to synchronize it with new updated firmware on its database or might be from NSU that failed to synchronize it with Nokia server somewhere from Europe or from the US. But I have tried since a week ago or more if I am not mistaken and I could see version is latest which is 40.0.005, just i had to wait till weekend to download it from latest NSU.

Nb: Because internet traffic was so busy during the workdays so I had to wait till till Saturday on weekend that line is fast enough.

Hi I was one guy who bought the earliest version of Nokia 5800xm (With TV out). My phone version is 21. I emailed Nokia about updating to version 40. They asked me to go to the Serivce centre for upgrade. On the web, when I enter my product code, I get the latest available version as 30. Iam confused. I will check with the service center guy & keep this post updated

strangely…some of the phones are already able to download the update..but im still waiting for mine…it is more than frustrating to wait for it, knowing that some people in my country can already enjoy the update..damn!!

I have updated to the new firmware….and…..WOW……..gr8. The new homescreen is awsome!! For those who are unable to answer calls……….just touch the answer button and scroll right (while getting incoming calls) and you will be able to take calls and answer.

Thanks Subhankar! Just the info I needed…. was about to get mad after updating cause the display no longer responded into the \"animated\" arrows to press and I couldn\’t answer the calls. Nokia have decided to add the \"iPhone factor\" – you have to slide the animations to have them working.
Same goes to the alarm…. even there you must slide the \"arrows\" to Stop or Snooze.

The home screen where you can now add more than 4 contacts is also great!

The only thing which doesn\’t work is GPS – software cannot connect

Boyla!…Homescreen of of V40 firmware is a theme-driven homescreen. You could still be able to use the old themes but the default was that of 5530.. So far, everything works fine.

If you can’t find update for your unit, that is caused by your product code. Just change your product and you’ll be able to receive the update when you try to update it with the new product code…

hi guys, V40.0.005 update is dependent on product code which can be located under the battery compartment. If your product code is not supported, nokia server will not give you the update.

Guys, I have just updated the software to V 40.0.005. Finally we have got the kinetic Scrolling which is very helpful for the 8 and 16 GB cards. Also the home screen resembles to that of 5530. New feature includes the New OVI Map 3.0. Overall a satisfactory move by Nokia. Appreciate Nokia for hearing the pleas of all the 5800 users.

Friends from India, do not waste time on Over the Air update as it won’t work. You can simply visit the authorised ASC and get the version updated as was in my case.

don’t know if it is my imagination but i think with this new update the phone is eating up more power.

sat101 i followed the instructions, and managed to \"change the product code\". but when i run the NSU it only detects my current software version and tells me that \"there are no updates for your phone available\". I tried with various codes (like 3 or 4) and the result remained the same. I wonder if there is some additional options that need to be set properly or it\’s me who\’s doing something wrong? When i returned to the original Product Code afterwards the updates reappeared, but i couldnt update to 40.0.005 once again.

Only v30.0.011 in India..I don’t know why Nokia is delaying to release that in India..Even the cheaper phones like 5230 and samsung corby series, has kinetic scrolling and is much more stable than 5800..thats what irritating..Me,my friends who owns high-end Nokia mobile phones are not satisfied..since they are delaying we lost our interest in these phone and the phone becomes very old when they release latest firmware..no use..there is no value for our money..

I updated my 5800 (from bangalore ) with this new version 15 days back… every thing is superb. I guess it has also fixed the phone hanging issue i used to have before. I took some time for me to figure out how to answer a call when its locked.. but now i know that like the KS .. was the only thing my phone was missing…

i cannot update my 5800music express type RM-356 firmware, i currently using v 21.0.025 but nokia website says the latest version is 40.0.005. i was unable to update using *#0000#->options->check for updates. it says that no update available. i tried to update using nokia pc suit nokia software updater. ive updatet the nokia software updater using version 01.08.010.40008. and this software says im up to date but nokia website says im not.
what should i do?

Look, if your phone is saying that there isn’t a newer update than V31 than it’s obvious that Nokia hasn’t officially released V40 for that model. This means if you put the pre-release update on your phone it is likely that it won’t be fully functional. So just wait for the official release and stop being so impatient.

Same problem here – Type RM-356 ans only shows update V3.1…just gonna have to wait until nokia pulls their fingers out!

It’s your mobile service provider’s fault that you can’t download it. You have to download a program (sorry i don’t know the name of the program) and with this stuff, you can change your mobile phone mobile service number (product code) to another one, which allow you to install the new firmware. after the install you change back the number and that’s all you can use your phone again with the new firmware!

Was on T-Mobile V31, when checked via NSU V40 not available on T-Mobile. Update would probably be available around April/ May. Had to de-brand the handset via NSS (google it). V40 works perfectly now. Be aware de-branding may invalidate your warranty!

I purchase a Nokia XM 5800 RM356. (Srilanka) it s having the update v30.0.011. wgen i searched from phone it said “no update” . but after searchin from comp it said available version is – 31.0.101.

I also had a similar problem, i couldn’t update my firmware as i was on v31, and NSU kept on saying there are no updates. So i followed the suggestion made by @fusin, thanks man it worked, i downloaded the Nemises application on the url he sent and updated my phones product code, thereafter I used NSU to check for updates and it brought back v40 …. amazing.. get yourself one too

some clips can only be played for few seconds, and then the video freezes, while the sound keeps playing till the end

if there\’s no other one that have this symptom, perhaps something crashed when i was updating the software, and it\’s not the defect of the new software. by the way i updated my phone software from nokia care center, so i guess i\’ll go back there and try to solve the problem

Hey Drew, If you already have a kinectic scorlling then you must have the latest version.. What version is your phone showing up?
For all.. For a new featured Phone, there is a new tech upgraded called “fota” which is the easiest way to upgrade you firmware.. In the little old models they do not have this tech … Till it comes enjoy with what you have

Am I the only one to be somewhat underwhelmed by this? Yes, the kinetic scroll in Contacts and especially in Music is very good. But not being able to use it in text messages because it just highlights text for copy/pasting? Don’t like that much. If you get long texts, KS would be very useful.

As for the homescreen, I can get a Contacts bar and keep my shortcuts, albeit at the bottom, but I don’t want email notification so switched that off…no option to replace it with anything useful though, like text message previews, or, as with the old firmware, the day/next day diary events. No KS through Application Icons either as it just selects the icon at first touch. Definitely unimpressed with the Homescreen and it’s lack of customization, unless I’m missing something.

Found the Contacts Widget (which seems to be, to a cynical mind, geared toward getting people onto Ovi software suite rather than PC Suite, which is far superior IMO); no idea what the new Music widget is.

Landscape maps are a definite improvement, although the program does now shut down randomly.

It’s a definite step in the right direction, but I have to say it feels a little half-hearted. Could have been MUCH better, but that said, I’ll still take my 5800 over an iPhone ANY day of the week!

Another bug I\\\’ve found is that videos now don\\\’t play at all if you use the seek bar to skip part of the vid. The audio still plays but the picture freezes completely. And WHY oh why couldn\\\’t Nokia have taken the opportunity to separate pictures from video in the gallery? Songs and sound clips get separate sections; an album full of pictures with videos interspersed between them hardly makes for a satisfying experience when scrolling through them. It also makes videos very hard to find.

- Try setting “Show WLAN availability” to Never. Because if it is set to “Yes”, there will be a menu that will show, called “Scan for networks” where the longest interval for the phone to check is every 10 minutes, the shortest is every minute.

Hello from the US, everyone!

I can’t seem to get my OVI suite Software Update, PC Suite Software Updater, or standalone Nokia Software Updater programs to download/install the firmware upgrade. They all show an error when trying to connect to the server.

I’ve tried finding an open port as mentioned in the troubleshooting doc. but ALL of the ports from 62700-62750 are closed! I’ve been trying all day but can’t figure out how to open a closed port to allow the Suite Software programs to connect to Nokia.

I also tried downloading Over the Air using the firmware update code for Nokia (*#0000#) but it asks me to create a new server profile first, and, I have no idea how to do that or where to go from there! Is there a way to just download and install the firmware update directly to my computer and install it on my 5800 w/o the Nokia Software Updater programs?

i upgraded my firmware and have lost my playlists and all info in music player. even when i refresh music library (as suggested) the phone is not picking up any of my mp3 files from my phone or card memory. I need to go to file manage and pick one file at a time- and i can pick only 1 file! – to play.

has no one else had this problem? what do it do? HELP!

Nokia is not going to release V40 in all regions. Particularly in Southeast asia. Maybe it will be available in europe and US. Sad to say im from southeast asia. :c but im contented with V31. I think V40 will release after 5800xm model will face out. lol

Concerning the refresh library issue, if you already have the songs on ur pc, u can use the pc suite and transfer the songs from ur pc to music library.

pc suite comes with ur mobile(on the cd). Just install it.

I live in Malaysia..I tried download this firmware thru software provided by Nokia and directly thru the phone..both can’t get thru..is it because it is still not available in Malaysia and when is it going to be available here?? is there any other method to update this firmware besides those two…cheers

@ vishal Just connect ur phone with pc….go to e drive ( card ) then private folder

Open Windows Explorer
- Opened E:\\\\Private folder
- Opened 101ffca9 Folder
- Deleted harvesterdb.dat file
- Disconnect phone from PC
- Turn device OFF then ON back again
- Refresh the music library
- Songs were added successfully

Just upgraded to the new firmware ( V50.0.005 ). I was trying to update by OTA but no success. Then updated with nokia upgrade software ( with usb cable). Now phone touch response is much much better and of-course, new home screen style is awesome. A very important update by nokia.

Still no native SIP-client. How can Nokia be so arrogant to ignore the need of users. At first the Nokia N97 (also a S60V5 phone) didn’t also have a Voip (SIP) client, but Nokia added it later. Now one have the install a custom program like Fring to use SIP on a Nokia 5800. But I liked the native Voip client as present in other phone models. So Nokia, PLEASE enable the native Voip SIP client in future firmware releases!!

Threads like the one above are the reason nokia will be gone within the next few years. I have never owned a worse phone than this horrible piece of plastic. Despite it’s countless bugs i haven’t once been able to download an update for the phone. I can’t enable web feeds, it has randomly deleted all of my messages and contacts on various occasions… I cannot wait to get rid of it.
