Do you use Ovi Maps on your Nokia handset? Things are set to get a whole lot more exciting over the coming year thanks to Nokia subsidiary Navteq, which is working on 3D technology that promises to revolutionise the way we look at maps. Navteq, which is owned by Nokia, has been working on a system called Navteq True. This has been fitted to the vehicles that go around the world, logging data that will eventually appear on software such as Ovi Maps. Navteq True uses technology called lidar (light detection and ranging), which gathers millions of data points using lasers.

With 64 lasers in place on a Navteq True system, each data collection vehicle is capable of recording an incredible 1.5 million data points a second. The data points are captured in 3D, and once put together into a more familiar map layout, it has the potential to shake up the world of navigation.

What does this mean for you and your Nokia? Well, for a start, Navteq has already started selling 3D maps of built-up areas, which it refers to as Enhanced 3D City Models. At present, these maps are only available for the US, and you’ll have to wait until later this year for European mapping. You’ll also have to wait to buy them – unless you live in the US – as they won’t be on sale here until later this year.

Unfortunately, it’ll also be a little while longer before you’ll be able to become a proper cyber tourist on your Nokia, flying up Regent Street and checking out Buckingham Palace, as Navteq True has yet to be embraced by Nokia. That said, it seems like only a matter of time before the company implements Navteq True into its Ovi Maps software, providing an edge over rivals such as Google Maps.
