2009 in Review: The Year Nokia Ovi Store Came to Town
Nokia’s Ovi Store, which launched back in May this year, is Nokia’s one-stop-shop for applications, services, widgets, and games. The premise of the Ovi Store is to consolidate Nokia’s extensive services, applications, and games under one roof, which gives you, the user, a more coherent and organised experience when using Nokia products. But what makes the Ovi Store so good? Read on after the jump for our analysis of what makes the Ovi Store tick.
The Ovi Store is a free service, meaning you can sign-up to use it without having to spend a penny. In addition, the range of services, apps, and games that are available are constantly evolving and changing to compensate for the ever-increasing needs of the consumer – in this sense, Ovi intends to be on the cusp of new advances, both in terms of customer service and technology.
Ovi’s key services are Ovi Mail, the Ovi Player, Ovi Games, Ovi Maps, and Ovi Contacts and Calender. These are, obviously, key things that people use everyday. However, this is just the surface of what the Ovi Store in its entirety offers Nokia users. In addition, the actual core services, such as Ovi Mail, are second-to-none. For instance, once you have an Ovi Mail account, all of your emails can be organised in one place, no matter how many email accounts you have. Additionally, you will be able to access IM accounts too, which makes communicating with the people that matter that little bit easier.
The Ovi Shop forms Ovi’s market place where you can buy apps, utilities, widgets and features. The Shop itself is extremely well laid out, easy to use, and like most Nokia products, very user intuitive. You can get stuff over the air from your device, or alternatively use your PC to download them, then transfer them over to your mobile – obviously, this is a useful feature for anyone with limited data allowance on their handsets.
Ovi Maps, which is Nokia’s free navigation tool, offers Ovi users’ the ability to plan and navigate routes, receive turn-by-turn directions, the memorisation of certain routes, a compass – so you’ll always know which way is north -, as well as listings of landmarks, POIs, and public transport locations.
As we said, the Ovi Store is constantly evolving to best cater to the ever-increasing needs of consumers, and because of this new apps, such as the HourPower and MemoTouch are appearing everyday, which make using your mobile easier, more fun, and generally more efficient.
Overall, the Ovi Store is a God-Send as it offers all of Nokia’s services under one roof, and one brand – Ovi. In addition, one of our favourite aspects of the Ovi Store is how you can sync everything up, so you have a more organised digital life. For instance, Ovi Mail syncs all your email, Ovi Calender syncs all your contacts and events, and Ovi Music Player allows you to sync you PC music to your mobile.
In short, we adore Nokia Ovi Store both for its level of service and the fact that it is constantly changing and evolving. Also, the addition of Maemo platform services to the Ovi Store, which has been semi-confirmed by Nokia, means that even expansion and service will soon be available to Nokia users.
