Nokia Unwraps New Symbian Interface

Nokia's Unwraps New InterfaceThe reports of Symbian’s demise are surely a little previous, as Nokia is clearly working on a two-platform approach. Furthermore, Nokia has struck out at the doubters by taking the the wrapping off its new interface, revealing what has to be the best looking and easiest interface yet. What’s more, we can expect to see the first of these changes to appear within the next six months. Find out about Nokia taking the wraps off its new interface after the jump…

Nokia has been talking about its plans to the business community as part of the Nokia Capital Market Day. On the surface of things that may sound a little deadly dull but Nokia took the occasion to drop a little glamour and cool into the proceedings by revealing its plans for the updated Symbian interface.

Kai Oistamo, who is Nokia’s Vice Executive President for Devices, gave a great presentation that showed off some of the work in progress. The new interface will be three times faster than the current Symbian interface. What’s more, scrolling will be dished out in full 60fps (frames per second) instead of the 15fps we get at the moment. This means scrolling and getting around the newly designed homescreen will be slicker and better than ever.

It’s not only a speeded up interface we can expect, as most of the changes highlighted were to do with how we’ll interact with the new interface. So, getting email up and running will take two clicks, not four and with the improvements to multi-touch you’ll get to your movies and music in two clicks, not eight.

The new interface will roll out in two phases, the first to be delivered with the first half of 2010, while the rest of the changes will be delivered before the end of 2010. Oistamo claimed there will be no slippage and these changes will be delivered.

To re-affirm what has already been outlined, Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, stated in his speech that next year he expects the “user interface with Symbian to be a non issue.” So how does that grab you, it looks like those who had Symbian on the rope had better look again, as the screen grabs below show off an amazing interface and one we can’t wait to get our hands on.

CMON Get in there! I have been a fan of symbian but do really like Meamo 5 on the N900 simply because it is soo smooth. Have a N97 and love it but its a bit slow for my liking but NEW SYMBIAN looks SERIOUSLY awesome, but only hoped it would come earlier because by then who knows?? Other phone OS will probably have new stuff out.

My only concern is that Nokia leaves Sybian as openly functional as it is now and doesn’t cause the mobile power users to suffer because people want ease of use. I personal don’t mind the way Symbian is right now but I completely agree that it took me a while to become so proficient at using it, which I agree is not a good thing. I am personally moving to Maemo after the holidays and picking up an N900 as it offers up an even better computer like experience. I want a computer in my pocket that acts as a phone, not a phone in my pocket that acts like a computer.
