Nokia to limit Maemo launches in 2010?
If the news that Nokia was going to switch its N Series over to the Maemo 5 operating system had you expecting a flood of new devices in 2010 then you may be in for a little disappointment. It seems that Nokia only has plans to launch only one Maemo 5 device in 2010, find out more about it after the jump…
The Nokia N900 may be on everyone’s lips and wish lists at the moment but anyone with an eye on the future will already be thinking about future Maemo devices coming down the pipe. However, a report that has popped up on Reuters seems to suggest that we’ll need to bide our time getting out hands on anything other than the Nokia N900.
Check out our Nokia N900 Hands-on
The report claims that Nokia is only looking at launching one other Maemo 5 handset in 2010 but doesn’t go on to state whether that would be an update to the Nokia N900 or a totally new class of device.
The story related on Engadget claims this slow release would be down to Nokia cutting back on its R&D staff. However, it seems the success of the Nokia N900 has taken the company largely by surprise and would need to get its strategy in place before launching a host of devices. It’s worth pointing out that along with Nokia not switching over to the N Series until 2012, that Nokia is also now clearly working on a two-platform approach.
So, if Nokia is only going to release one Maemo 5 handset next year what do you want to see? Should it be something like the Nokia E72 packing in a full QWERTY keyboard in a candybar design, or should we be hoping for the Nokia 5800 or Nokia X6 design with no keyboard but still touchscreen? Business or pleasure, what do you think?

IMHO Nokia has too many devices and have spread themselves too thin, so a slow down in the number of devices being released could be a good thing if they take the opportunity to properly design and quality control both the hardware and software before release.
For the next Maemo device definitely the complete range of 3G operating frequencies so that it can be sold worldwide, maybe a variant with a capacitive screen, and lastly a slightly smaller device (a N900 mini so to speak)
