Ovi Store: Voice Recorder Touch Review
Voice Recorder Touch is another in Offscreen Technologies series of simple touch-focused apps, alongside previous efforts like Converter Touch[link to review] and bedside clock applet Night Stand Touch. Voice Recorder Touch is, of course, a voice recorder. That you touch. This much is obvious, but what is it like to use?
We have criticised some of Offscreen’s Touch apps in the past for their – shall we say – ideosyncratic user interface choices. With VRT, though, they really seem to have got it right. The app is almost ludicrously simple, wits main features being a scrollable list of recordings (initially empty, of course) and a big, red RECORD button. Tapping the button will start the recording, tapping it again will stop the recording and make a date and time-stamped entry on the list.
The app makes great use of Offscreen’s favoured brushed metal gradient colour scheme and puts the less important controls up in a darker area of the screen away from the business end of the app. A playback button and dustbin icon for deleting unwanted recordings live just above the scrolling list and ‘about’ and ‘quit’ icons lurk in the darke top corners.
And that’s pretty much it. The scrolling list is worth a mention in particular for ripping off paying homage to the ‘rotating cylinder’ effect you often find on iPhone apps. Its a decent imnplementation too, and has a satisfying ‘bounce’ when you reach either end of the list.
Its not all rosy – we would have liked some clue as to where the sound files where being saved so we could transfer the to our PC for fiddling around with. Also the timestamped filenames are listed date first, making the list all look rather similar if you have made a lot of recordings on the same day (as we did for this review, of course). The ability to rename recordings would have made finding them again much easier.
Still, this is a pleasing take on a simple app. It doesn’t do anything that the built-in recorder app can’t, but what it does, it does with style.
