Today Touch review
Today Touch is like a Nokia N97 version of one those ‘on this day in history‘ items that you sometimes hear on the radio or see in a local paper. More specifically, it is like Wikipedia’s ‘On this day..’ sidebar – wikipedia being the source for all the data that Today Touch uses. Check out how we got on with Today Touch on our Nokia N97 with our in-depth Today Touch review…
Using Today Touch is simple, simply fire it up and you get a list of facts about the current date. Facts are organised into categories : ‘Births’, ‘Deaths’, ‘Events’ and ‘Holidays and Observances’. which can be switched by flicking your finger across a scrolling set of tabs at the top of the screen. This method isn’t always as accurate as you might like, and it is easy to skip past the tab you want unless you are precise.
Precision is problem with the other three main controls too. Tapping the title bar will allow you to pick another date to browse, while the top corners of the screen hold ‘about’ and ‘exit’ icons. Unless you hit these icons exactly you will activate the date picker, and as each is tiny this will cause problems for anything but the smallest finger.
Wikipedia asserts its ownership of the facts via a small pop-up that periodically appears at the bottom of the screen – tapping this will fire up your browser and take you to the current ‘On this day’ page at Wikipedia but, oddly, tapping individual facts doesn’t do a thing. Given the huge resources at the Wikipedia page this facts were lifted from, this seems a silly thing to leave out. Making each fact a link would have added a lot of value.
Despite the interface issues, Today Touch is a useful and entertaining little app. If we could be allowed one request it would be a widget version of Today Touch – this is the kind of thing made for a place on your home screen.
