Nokia N97: Best Apps for... Money ManagementSmartphones like the Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 Mini aren’t just for email, maps and social networking, they can be put to serious tasks to like looking after your financial needs. Here we look at a clutch of new money management apps fresh from the Ovi Store, helping your Nokia N97 make the most of your money…

Before you can download any of these apps you’ll need to register your device with Ovi Store, which also entitles you to updates and message alerts from Nokia and is a great way of keeping abreast of what’s going on at the Ovi Store.

Money Manager
Size: 0.706 MB
Price:  £17.99
Link: Money Manager
A review on Ovi Store describes this as “too powerful for a mobile phone” – we’re not sure if that is a complement or not, to be honest. What this is is a full-featured financial package that will let you manage multiple accounts, track expenses, outgoings and income. You can plan budgets, set timed transactions and forecast future account balances. You can create Excel-compatible reports and export your data as a QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) file for use in MS Money, Quicken, etc. Blimey.

FLORIN Finance Tracker
Size: 0.203 MB
Price:  £1.00
Link: FLORIN Finance Tracker
FLORIN is a bit more basic that Money Manager (as reflected by the price) but you can still track a number of accounts and log expenses, plus see graphical reports of how your finances are faring. If you are just managing personal finances and don’t want to get too Gordon Gekko this could be just the thing.

Kids Cashier
Size: 0.173 MB
Price:  £1.50
Link: Kids Cashier
If you are having financial trouble now, it may be because you were never taught how to manage your money in your formative years. To help the next generation avoid your mistakes (assuming you have made any – we don’t like to judge) Kids Cashier is an educational game and learning tool that aims to teach the basics of financial responsibility to impressionable young minds.

Cost Counter
Size: 0.045 MB
Price:  £3.00
Link: Cost Counter
A money management tool that lets you list your costs and outgoings in different categories. The unusual interface lists costs in hierarchies, with sub-costs  as ‘branches of the tree’ under major cost centres. It takes a bit of getting used to, but you can soon end up with an at-a-glance list of your major expenses, with the ability to drill down to see how each is broken up.

ExpenseManager
Size: 0.093 MB
Price:  £6.00
Link: ExpenseManager
Ah, if only this could have found its way onto Parliamentary smartphones – the last couple of months might have been so very different. Keep track of you Duck Island/Moat Cleaning purchases with ExpenseManager and export your figures to an Excel-compatible spreadsheet (CSV or HTML formats supported) for further analysis or submission to your finance department. Also covers non-ridiculous expenses and people who aren’t MPs.

Teach Children to Save Money Too
    Nov 13, 2009 23:11

Great list, we use a couple of these ourselves, especially Kids Cashier. As a single parent that was *less* than good with money throughout my youth, teaching children about money is CRUCIAL, in my mind. I’m not going to blame parents, schools, etc, but quite simply, I clearly “didn’t get it”, and I am still paying for those mistakes a decade later! A program was suggested to me by a friend, that teaches kids to be responsible with money, and puts them in control of their money. It’s a fun, interactive booklet + personal website that makes tracking their money fun – more importantly, the tugs on the pantleg going through the grocery checkout and the tantrums have all but disappeared! I guess that’s a little self centered of me… but any parent knows those situations all to well. For the record, I too used to do this to my parents, I was apparently horrible to bring into a store… oops!
