Preview: Nokia N97 v20 Firmware update
We’re big fans of the Nokia N97, it’s a good looking and responsive device that’s put a wealth of applications and widgets at our fingertips. However, the new upcoming v20 firmware update looks like it will take Nokia’s flagship device – as well as the N97 mini – to a whole new level of usability. Read on after the jump to find out more…
One of the most obvious benefits of the v20 firmware update will be the long awaited implementation of kinetic scrolling into the Nokia N97, which is something Nokia N97 users have been screaming out for since the device launched. The addition of kinetic scrolling will add a more tactile experience to overall navigation by allowing you to flick through long lists, such as your contacts and music files, seamlessly.
In addition to the improved tactility of the device, the v20 firmware update will add more memory and a ream of new widgets, such as CNN, ESPN, and a Facebook widget that comes with Lifecasting with Ovi.

The update also sees the Ovi Store becoming fully integrated into the N97’s home screen for quick access to applications and games. Additionally, Nokia have improved the music function by increasing the amount of album artwork available – so no more albums minus the artwork in your phone, which is certainly good news for the more obsessive-compulsive users out there!
Finally, there has also been a welcome update to Nokia Maps, which sees the addition of Lonely Planet, a tourist guide designed for people who are travelling on their own, as well as some general improvements in its usability and functionality. All in all, this looks like its going to be a fantastic update that will bring a whole new level of usability to the Nokia N97 – needless to say, we’re waiting with baited breath!

Does anyone know the relase date for V2 and will it be available to al l neworks?
One thing they should do is keep the navigation scroller in one place all of the time, rather then the screen jumping left to right while going in and out folders.
Any updates when this will be coming to the UK ?

leigh – i completely agree. the n97 is a good phone and all (i have one myself), but it looks as though the n900 would be much more deserving of being nokia’s flagship device. the symbian os does need a major overhaul, least not aesthetically – it just looks outdated in today’s smartphone world. if the n97 was cheaper then it probably wouldn’t incite as much disappointment as it does, but for what we paid for it, it should be better. i will definitely give the n900 a look when it comes out. i just hope that nokia release a phone that is actually READY this time and that it doesn’t suffer from the bugs and instability issues that the n97 did when it was first released.

I can imagine that the new firmware will bring many new features to an already good phone, but with the N900 around the corner i think this new update is too little too late. The nokia N900 is 10 x that of the N97 with a much better user interface running on meamo5 and much more potential when it comes to apps. The N97 should have never been released with symbian s60, its an old programme with little potential of improving they need to keep that for the mid range phones such as the nokia 5800. I bought a 5800 for £250 and thought that the phone was farely cool, when the N97 came out i snapped it up on its release date to find it had the exact same software barring the home screen, i felt ripped off wheres the wow factor in that. the N900 on the other hand as a host of amazing features well worth the money nokia are asking.
