Nokia joins The Wireless Power Consortium
Nokia has confirmed that it has become a fully fledged member of The Wireless Power Consortium along side other big players, such as Phillips, Duracell and Sanyo. Now, you could be forgiven for thinking that charging your mobile phone wirelessly – without any sort of wire or cable – is the stuff of science-fiction. However, this is exactly what The Wireless Power Consortium is all about.
While Nokia hasn’t made any concrete promises about the likelihood of incorporating the Consortium’s Qi wireless power standard into its products just yet, it is looking quite likely that wireless charging technology could be a big thing in the coming years.
Commenting on Nokia’s involvement with The Wireless Power Consortium, Markku Verkama, Director of Devices R&D at Nokia, said: “Consumers expect ease of use and general compatibility of mobile devices. By joining the Wireless Power Consortium, Nokia continues to support the open standards approach that aims to meet these consumer expectations.” He added, “Wireless charging technology carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging.”
Whether or not this will be something that happens in the next few months is certainly debatable. However, in the long term it looks pretty certain that we’ll all be discarding our ugly phone chargers in favour of wireless charging sooner than we think.
