Nokia buys Dopplr – social networking for travellers
Nokia has taken its first tentative steps into the world of social networking with its acquisition of Dopplr, the online service that allows its users to share travel plans and tips. Could this be the start of something a little special on your Nokia smartphone, find out more about Nokia buying Dobblr after the jump…
Dopplr, whose tag-line is ‘Where Next?’, began life in 2007. Since then, they’ve been allowing users the world over to share travel advice and tips. In a nutshell, Dopplr allows its users to share their traveling experiences, both good and bad, with other members. This information then collectively forms an extensive online tool for both experienced and newbie travelers alike.
Last year alone, there were 500,000 trips and 250,000 potential meeting places registered across the service, illustrating what a growing phenomenon Dopplr is becoming.
The acquisition comes as part of Nokia’s commitment to developing a constantly evolving set of tools for its mobile users. Obviously, the benefits of such an application when used in conjunction with, say Maps, and other travelling based applications are quite extensive, and pretty exciting too.
Needless to say, we’ll keep you posted on any new information relating to this as soon as it’s available.
