Speech Debelle has picked up the Mercury Music Prize with her part harrowing, part uplifting debut album, Speed Therapy. The 13 tracks depict her years of life living homeless and in hostels, the heartbreak relationship with her mother and the world of drugs and crime living on London’s streets.

On Tuesday Speech Therapy liftws the unknown rapper to new levels as she took the coveted Mercury Prize, beating a host of established acts including Kasabian and Bat for Lashes.
