Comes With Music: Building a Library The Used to Usher
Comes With Music is part of Nokia and is the all-you-can-eat music download subscription service. All you need is a Nokia XpressMusic phone (we’re using the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic) and a Comes With Music account and you have access to over six million tracks. We’ve been using the service to build a music library like no other and have reached the Letter U – see how we’ve been getting on…
The Letter T proved a treasure-trove of music on Comes With Music, but frankly we’re hoping for the same degree of success with the Letter U, largely as we can’t think of any bands that start with the letter.
The problems start with Lady of the house, who can only think of U2 but as she puts it, ‘Even if it is free, I wouldn’t want THAT in my house!’ so we don’t even check to see what’s on offer! As you can tell, we’re not big U2 fans in our house…
Things get a little better when teenage boy turns up and has a little more success as he plumbs for rock band, The Used. They seem to have been made for MTV but never made it to the real mainstream. Still, we add Shadow Believer, Lies For The Liars and Birth to the download list. Pre-teen girl can also think of only one artist, Usher. Fortunately, he’s got a few albums under his belt so we can expand the music library a little more with titles such as Usher, Here I Stand, My Way, Confessions and the 22 track My Megamix
When it comes to my turn, I find that choices are a little thin on the ground and options on Comes With Music even thinner. Ugly Casanova is the side-project of Modest Mouse main-man Isaac Brock. However, that’s no guarantee you’ll find his work on Comes With Music. It proved also the case for indie-rockers Urusei Yatsura, who may have been named after a top selling manga title but that doesn’t mean you’ll find them on Comes With Music.
So, not a good haul this week with neither the Letter U nor Comes With Music rising to the occasion. Still, we manage to add eight albums for free, which is better than nothing!
Random Album: With no music category starting with the Letter U, we’ve plumped for an album from the Rediscover section of Comes With Music. We had to cheat a bit but the first band we find with U in the title was The Velvet Underground, who have their Loaded: The Fully Loaded Edition up for grabs on Rediscover. This 33 track compilation includes Sweet Jane and Who Loves The Sun? Along with a host of demos and outtakes.
