Nokia N97: Best games

The Nokia N97’s bumper-sized 3.5-inch screen and beefy processor make this flagship phone seem tailor-made for gaming, and unlike other touchscreen Nokia devices it actually supports N-Gage (although some of you might need to install the app – check out our guide to doing so here). With that in mind, we thought you might be interested in what we see as the top five N97 games around. Read on for our thumb-bashing picks…

Age of Empires III
Price: £8
Where: N-Gage

One of the all-time classic real-time strategy games is now available on N-Gage, and it’s a real corker of a game. Featuring the classic RTS combo of resource management, research, building and combat, Age of Empires III offers a gentle campaign mode to get you started, with skirmish for quick battles and a full-on multiplayer mode via N-Gage Arena.

Guitar Rock Tour
Price: £3
Where: Gameloft

Clearly “inspired” by Guitar Hero and Rock Band, Guitar Rock Tour makes use of the Nokia N97’s touchscreen: you have to tap the correct part of the screen as each note of the likes of “Smoke on the Water” scrolls down a virtual fretboard. There are 51 levels in all, with three degrees of difficultly.

Million Dollar Poker feat. Gus Hansen
Price: £6
Where: N-Gage

The poker sim isn’t for novices, but if you know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em you’ll have a blast. The Career mode lets you take part in tournaments against a huge range of player types, including star Gus Hansen himself.

Frozen Bubble
Price: Free
Where: Frozen Bubble

Essentially a remake of the classic Bust-a-Move (aka Puzzle Bobble), this is a simple but devilishly addictive puzzle game that asks you to clear levels of coloured bubbles by “popping” them. Anyone who likes Tetris will love this.

Dodge This!
Price: Free
Where: Nokia

Another touchscreen-friendly
A simple (and free!) touchscreen-powered game that sees you use the touch controls to steer an airplane away from incoming enemy fire for as long as possible.
