Ovi Store: Best new apps
The Nokia Ovi Store has plenty more new apps for your installing pleasure. This week we have a novel culinary use for your Nokia, an unusual location-based app, security-conscious texting, a sneaky video app and something to capture a smile. Read on for all the details.
The Nokia Ovi Store is your one-stop shop for the latest in apps, tools, themes and utilities and is on a steady path to release up to 500 new pieces of content a week. One thing is for sure, the releases keep on coming, with new apps for printing, timing, navigation and wireless networking all arriving this week. Read on for our run-down of the latest apps on Ovi Store.
Egg Timer
Type: Utilities
Price: £3.00
Size: 0.319MB
Although placing your Nokia next to a pan of boiling water may not be the best idea we have heard this year, this neat little app could only be improved with the addition of an accelerometer-powered hourglass. £3 seems a little steep, mind.
NetQin Secure SMS
Type: Utilities
Price: £4.00
Size: 0.209MB
NetQin claims to protect sensitive SMS messages – think banking details, passwords and ‘adult’ communiqués – from being intercepted by the unscrupulous or merely nosey. Two phones running NetQin Secure SMS can exchange encrypted SMS – if the person you are sending to doesn’t yet have NetQin, an additional ‘download it here’ SMS will be sent alongside your message. Messages are stored in their encrypted state and can only be read with the correct password or phrase.
I Parked Here
Type: City Guides/Maps
Price: £3.00
Size: 2.139MB
One of those obvious-sounding apps in retrospect. I Parked Here uses your Nokia’s location-awareness to perform one simple task – remembering where you are parked. The app works quickly, using cell-triangulation rather than the slower GPS and can guide you back to your motor with turn-by-turn directions and a map display.
ArcSoft SmileShoot
Type: Photo & Video
Price: £3.00
Size: 1.578MB
SmileShoot aims to make capturing smiling faces a little easier. The app uses facial recognition to detect when subjects are smiling and take the shot at the optimum moment of happiness. Useful for trying to photograph grumpy or uncooperative toddlers – i.e. all toddlers.
MobiVU 3G Video Surveillance
Type: Utilities
Price: £26.99
Size: 0.094MB
One of the pricier Ovi Store apps at nearly 27 quid, and perhaps one of the more ethically dubious too. MobiVU 3G Video Surveillance invites you to hide your cameraphone, then remotely activate it by initiating a video call from another device. MobiVU will silently answer the call and begin streaming live video. This will, of course, only be used for lawful pursuits.
Before you can download any of these apps you’ll need to register your device with Ovi Store, which also entitles you to updates and message alerts from Nokia and is a great way of keeping abreast of what’s going on at the Ovi Store.
