Nokia N97 Firmware v11.0.021 update

The Nokia N97 has received a firmware update across Europe taking the Nokia N97 firmware to Version v11.0.021. This update brings with it a whole host of minor updates, such as solving Widget issues, as well as a new version of Accueweather. Check out the changelog and full details of the Nokia N97 firmware v11.0.021 update…

The guys over at All About Symbian have flagged up that the update is currently only available on those devices with a contract and is not supported in SIM free devices. The update has appeared on our Nokia N97 but so far hasn’t been coaxed into actually installing itself on the device.

As soon as we get it loaded and have a chance to check it out we’ll bring you an update. However, in the meantime, check out the Changelog for yourself:

I updated my sim free N97. Just use the Nokia Software updater application. Works fine from that.

I just tried updating my sim free N97 over the air and using NSU – From uk… no updates avail?

I’m in Toronto, Canada, I have the North American version of the N97, and there is a software update available here too, indeed. Just connect your phone to Ovi Suite/Nokia Software Update, and it gives you the firmware V11 update. :)

Or, according to this link, you can also do it over the air here in North America: http://www.n97fanatics.com/nokia-n97-firmware-updated-112021-how-to/

Guys, thanks for the great advice! Updater has played ball now and got the update. Going to post findings tomorrow :)

How is every one else finding it?

Nothing in the UK so far. Looks like another stunning FW rollout.

    @gizn,

Yes, I’ve noticed other people in the UK on Twitter complain about no FW update available there yet. :( C’mon, Nokia, speed up the process!

I find my N97 NAM a bit snappier now after the update, and the backlight issue seems to have been (at least mostly) fixed. Overall, I’m happy with it, but haven’t yet used it for more than a couple hours since the update.

it not out in the uk as they have to add the iplayer software to it and other uk only things

    Jul 6, 2009 10:17

still not in the uk – this is a joke – as for Iplayer needing to be added? Its already on there and is integrated into the shell – it wouldn’t delay it by a week!

    Jul 6, 2009 11:12

Agreed Bob, this is a joke. I enjoy my N97 but the firmware isn’t available to users in the UK. I’ve been checking every day so far. BBC iPlayer can be downloaded from their site anyway so if people want it they can grab it themselves as far as I’m concerned.

    Jul 6, 2009 12:23

@Bob, @Lewis, have you checked Updater as the Nokia N97 update has been on there since last week. I’m happily running the latest version on my SIM free N97, as are other people I know.

    Mike
    Jul 6, 2009 13:03

Mikey Bee – it depends on your product code, certain codes will not allow you the v11 firmware. Mine is a UK sim free N97 bought from the Nokia shop and the software up loader just says v10 is the latest.

I have to agree with bob and Lewis, it is very frustrating that Nokia have done a good job in doing a new code release so soon after launch but then not being able to distribute it in the UK is crazy.

Nokia when will we all get the v11?

personally i am getting peeved off with teh slggishness of my N97 – The RAM is ridiculously low .. i have had to delete apps that i dont use just to get the thing to work! – hoping that the firmware update might tackle this issue by allowing you to set a defined path for all apps – (it still wants to add nokia messaging to phone memory and at 2MB thats all i have free!)

Not a happy bunny but do think teh phone will shine once the apps are available / firmware is up to date and running sweetly and my case turns up so it doesnt get scratch next to my house keys in my pocket..

Im having loads of trouble with my N97 and im not very technically minded…mine takes ages to load any photos stored, the thumbnails dont appear, freezing all the time, on the facebook widget typing is craaazy typing in symbols rather then letters, anyone else havign these problems?? Or know when the update will be released in the UK im on a pay monthly contract with vidafone but havent recieved v11.0.021 update and my update scanner shows and no updates available? :-S

    Jul 8, 2009 14:16

i’m having the same facebook symbol problems, i think you have to hold the bottom right arrow key down for a few seconds this solves the problem, as for the firmware i’m very dissapointed this brings me back to when i first purchased the original N95, you would think after soo much experience within the smartphone field that they get it right the first time, I have always been a fan of nokia and stick up for the n series range anytime i here someone disrespecting them but Nokia are seriously starting to loose there grip within the phone market, they need to make there OS much more speedier and more user friendly for those unfamiliar with symbian….

Nokia n97 No firmware update yet ! ram issue under control now using handy taskman to keep on top of it .. And deleting cached data from the browser also helps a lot with the space on the C drive. Using the phone has become a lot better ” also I would advise ditching nokia messaging for profmail”

Hey – can you cheat you phone into the v.11 update by using a different product code ? Mine is 0585262, UK Vodafone, although I’m using an O2 sim. When I enter the product code on the Nokia support site it tells me my current version is up to date at 10.0.012. I also have a “custom version” which I’m guessing why the annoying Vodafone logo appears on the screen when I turn it on, even with an O2 sim ! Can I get rid of this ? There is also a permanent link to Vodafone Live on the home screen which I don’t want, anyone know if I can ditch this ??

    Thanks in advance !!

I have the same product code, the firmware update is not available within the UK yet! Nokia have e-mailed back from a rather irate e-mail and stated that there is NO confirmed date for the release on that product code yet!

Well, either Nokia roll out v11.0.021 on my phone in the next couple of days or it\\\’s going back within the 28 days of purchase…. v11.0.012 is unusable.

    Jul 9, 2009 15:42

I only received my N97 on July 8th, and wondered if anyone knows, once this update gets to become available in the UK, whether you will be able to get it to perform ‘over the air’? Mine doesn’t seem to like working with my laptop when placed in ‘PC Suite’ mode, and won’t even find the phone with the Software Updater.
Happy with it otherwise, just this whole not talking to my PC issue that would like rectified ASAP.

    Al
    Jul 9, 2009 18:33

Rik – had the same problem. Here’s what I did – seems to be working now (touch wood). 1 – Uninstall all Nokia software, Ovi, PC Suite, Software Updater, Connectivity drivers, etc, etc. 2 – Disable Bluetooth ( I read that Bluetooth and USB running simultneously can cause conflicts. 3 – Registry cleanse and reboot of PC. 4 – Download PC Suite 7 from n97 support part of Nokia website. 5 – Install Ovi from the disc with nothing else running at the time. Connect phone and follow Ovi wizard, again with nothing else running. 6 – Check for Ovi Updates (should find one for music, maps updater and maploader) It’s running much better second time round, I can drag albums from the PC to the phone and install the new Ovi Maps 3.0 which kept crashing first time. Haven’t gone through everything yet but it’s definitely better than the first installation !

    Good Luck !

My N97 Keeps coming up with script errors when i try and use accuweather. Although it was crap the 1 game guitar something or other has dissapeared off phone completely and using ovi store through the N97 keeps saying im logged out, when it says logged in at bottem of screen and in settings. also when using the slide button to unlock keys the screen wont always light up properly. COME ON NOKIA YOU COWBOYS!!! YOUR A HUGE MULTI NATIONAL COMPANY YOU ROLL OUT A FLAGSHIP PHONE WHICH WONT DO WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN (WHICH EFFECTS OUR STANDARD RIGHTS AS A CONSUMER) AND NOKIA HAVE SHOWN THERE USELESSNESS BY NOT GETTING US THE FIRMWARE TO FIX IT QUICKLY ENOUGH. Ive had mine since 28june09 ive emailed nokia TWICE WITH NO REPLY AND BEEN ON HOLD TWICE FOR 17 MINS TO CUSTOMER SERVICES/TECHNICAL ONLY TO BE CUT OFF THE LINE!?! All vodafone say is send it in for replacement/repair WHICH SHOWS HOW USELESS AND NON CUSTOMER FOCUSED THEY ARE!!! Damn things going back if firmware not recieved by next weekend!!! Ahhhhhhh rant over, sorry guys&gals.

I have just spoken to a line manager at Nokia Care, who said they are expecting the Nokia N97 V1.1 update in the next week or so, but Nokia are not giving them much information. Its probably better to ring Nokia HQ in Finland to ask them when the firmware is being released to the UK.

In the mean time, you can use swupdate to check if the update has been released.

    Mike
    Jul 10, 2009 23:35

I have had N97 since 20-6-2009 , the only way I can get the thing to work with any stability is to keep it lean. ie dont use it as a smart phone! If the memory gets anywhere near full or you try too many snazzy internet connections then mine will complain about \’a script error\’, refuse to connect via USB or simply freeze.

I now try and keep my free memory above 15MB on the C: drive and only use 1 live widget on the home screen which is not great but is keeping my phone running so I can use it without rebooting it.

If you have the USB connection not being recognised by phone or Ovi issue that is an issue with v10 FW. I found taking the battery out and then insert and remove the USB cable clears this issue for a while or at least until Nokia bother to update our phones

Oh and for those who suggested earlier in this post that tehy intend on returning their handset. Well if you got your N97 direct from Nokia, they told me that we only have 7 days to return the handset and not 28! If you leave it more than 7 days, your only option is it needs to be returned to a repair shop leaving you without a phone!

Nokia when will we in the UK get v11 and why are you making us wait so long?

    cossielover1369
    Jul 11, 2009 11:02

Returns through Vodafone are 28days and you get a new unit not a repair! Thank god i never bought mine direct from Nokia!!!

    Jul 13, 2009 19:31

Mine was 0585262 – I gave a chap in “Gizmo” in Finchley 20 quid and they stripped all the software off, including the Vodafone branding, and reloaded the generic, non branded Nokia default Sim free software, which is product code 0585162. Then they put the v11 firmware on for me. It took 2 and a half hours. They’re on 0208 3438850. Now I can get future firmware updates from Nokia PC Suite, without having to wait for the Vodafone version. Handy as I’m using an o2 SIM.

I can highly recommend Gizmo in Finchley – the shop looks very ropey, there’s no denying that, but they know their stuff and they’re very friendly.

Well worth giving them a call.

just to let everyone know that the firmware for the N97 unbranded uk variant is now available. Product code 0585162.

just use the nokia software updater on your pc and you’ll be able to update.

Just did mine and its working alot better so far. hope this helps some people.

I have updated with v11 but still problems with wi-fi connection, when i’m out of range it keeps telling me can’t find WLAN connection which it wasn’t saying before update. When flip phone open homescreen takes a few seconds to load and sometimes stays dull so you can see pic but not lit up. When anyone calls me the ringtone pauses for a second half way through, which is not a big problem but annoying. My accu weather will not find location now, it just keeps saying WLAN not available instead of connecting to orange, even though it is set to priority 1. Keeps looking for wi-fi even when orange wap available.

i have a feeling you can also so it over the air now…which is simply done by pressing *#0000# on your dialler then select options and ‘check for updates’ or something like that….saves backing up all the files you may have on the phone…best doing it within a Wi-Fi area though as 3g is a little bit slow.

after the firmware update i’m still experiencing major problems with accuweather not loading…the only way i think i might be able to fix the problem is by re installing accuweather from the ovi store…but guess what!! the ovi store wont load after firmware update….and yes i’m still experiencing problems with the backlight, not as often but still there…so people don’t get your hopes up about the v11 update, this is exactly how the original N95 went, it took several updates just to cover some of the problems and by the time they are released my contract will have ended with vodafone and no doubt i’ll be on the N98 haha

    cossielover1369
    Jul 16, 2009 11:34

Im with you Leigh!!! Dont bother with this update if your expecting fixes from update 11.21! Though i have to say accuweather is the only thing not working now (touch wood). I tried removing accuweather and did re-download from the ovi store but its the same just says “loading…”

Updating using Nokia Software Updater (as part of the Ovi suite) on Windows 7 is enough to scare the life out of anyone who tries it.

Fear not though; despite repeatedly having to remove the battery, remove USB, connect USB, connect battery… the update does work!

Ok, starting to get a little frustrated now!

    I have a UK sim free N97, product code – 0585162
1.SW Update on the phone says there is a Phone Software update and to update via PC
2.If I go to the “Can I update?” page on the Nokia website & type in my code(0585162) it says there is an update for my phone, it shows – “Latest available software for Nokia N97, product code 0585162
    Version: 11.0.021″

So I open the Nokia Software Updater on my pc, once loaded I click “Start” then “Next” and it then searches and finds my phone and tells me “No Software Updates Available For Your Phone” !!!!!

So what the Hell is going on here!? I am on OS Vista 32bit, my anti-virus, firewall and all other security is off when trying to update and I have downloaded the latest version of the Nokia Software Updater to my PC and installed and I just get the same result…..Can anyone help here please!?

Just been reading through everyone’s experiences. I got my N97 on the 25th of June and as a power-user, I saw all the glitches after a couple of days, decided to box it up again and go back to my trusted E71, while waiting for Nokia to do the right thing by us.

Well, I’m about to unbox mine again and hopefully I will get it updated like everybody else. Robin, I would suggest calling Nokia or going into the store in Regent Street and see if they have any other suggestions.

Personally, I am struggling to give up my E71 for the N97 and I am kinda waiting for the day that Nokia release an N97 in the body of an E71, touchscreen or not. Great form factor, with 200+mb Ram, an 8 or 12 MP camera and 32gb storage – with support for a 32gb micro sdhc card. Such a handset will do me for a looooong time to come :-) )

i’m now on my 4th Nokia N97 not because it was faulty but simply because vodafone are too stupid to realise that all i needed was a firmware update. Now i’m proberbly not alone in thinking that although the firmware update is the route of most of the problems there was also some hardware issues such as a lose slider on the side (felt cheap and breakable) also some people were having scratching problems with the camera slider and also the home button seemed uneven and the light omitted through at an akward angle….well i now have my 4th N97 as mentioned and it came already pre-loaded with the new firmware not only that but all the above problems were totally fixed so i reccomend anyone who has a 28 day return policy with vodafone or any other operator to return it asap and get the better version. cheers guys

I’ve now spoken to a person at T-Mobile Technical Support who didn’t try to fob me off, (Once i got past the lady who asked me if i’d turned it off and removed the battery etc?!?!) who fully understood my frustration with the phone and actually tried to help me find a way to do the firmware upgrade, but no joy. Overtly, they did say get the phone insured (check the small print first though!) then once a reliable method of flashing it is around, flash it. If it turns into a brick claim on the insurance, if it works, leave it unlocked. The big question for me is, why do t-mobile “lock” there phones? and why has it taken me a week to finally speak to some one who knows what there on about, answers to t-mobile please. I have 2 weeks left until my 28 days are up, so if your reading this T-Mobile, get cracking!?!?!?!??!

Nokia N97 not being recognized by PC when connected using USB data cable CA-101? Please help!?
When i connect my N97 to my PC, nothing appears on either the PC or the mobile. I just bought the phone a few days ago and this is the first time I’m trying to connect it to the PC. It uses a USB data cable CA-101. Ovi suite doesn’t detect the phone nor does it appear as a mass storage device when i select “mass storage” in the phone’s USB options. Does anyone know how this can be fixed. Am i not doin it correctly or is the usb port of the phone faulty.

How do i check the firmware model. And if i’ve to update the firmware to get rid of this error, how do i do it. I don’t have a bluettoth dongle or any other way of connecting it to the PC.

Nokia is attempting to compete with the iPhone with it’s N97 release – but it IT ISN”T MAC COMPATIBLE!!!!!! COME ON!!!!! Only reason I bought this thing is because only Vodaphone works in my house. I’m mad as hell! Ditto ALL the problems above too. I’d like Nokia to take me out of Vodaphone contract!
