Nokia Apps: Adaptxt Review
Rating: 2

Do you use predictive text? It is the Marmite of the phone UI world – loved by some, despised by others. Adaptxt is an attempt to improve on the predictive text experience by adding a little intelligence to the proceedings. Check out how we got on with Adaptxt as we put it to the test with Nokia S60 devices…

Adaptxt will let you, as the website puts it, *Watch your word predictions get personal*. What this means is that Adaptxt will trawl through your SMS messages, contacts, Emails and even your Facebook page – gathering unique words and adding them to your personalised dictionary.

The app stays resident in memory and will spring into action whenever you have to enter text. A special Adaptxt context menu can be called up by holding down the * key and you can switch between full-on predictive mode and a ‘multitap’ mode – like a normal keypad, with the addition of a ’suggested words’ drop-down – and numerical entry with a few taps of the # key.

The new-word scanning process can take a while the first time you do it, and the results are a bit of a mixed bag. The ‘intelligence’ only extends as far as knowing how to look for words and squirrel them away for later use. No decisions are made about the quality of the words that Adaptxt finds.

We found that the app was picking up useful words like the names of friends and places we visit.. but it was also picking up the rubbish or truncated spellings of them that we entered while distracted, half-cut or just lazy. Net result – not much help, really.

You can, if you wish, just assemble a text file full of words and point Adaptxt at it – it will gobble it up and add them to your dictionary. Single words can be added on the fly, too, so if you realise that the long name you just typed is going to come in handy you can have Adaptxt remember how to spell it for you.

How useful you find Adaptxt will depend on how set in your ways you are, with respect to learning a new way to enter txt. It is much like T9, but different enough to require a small learning curve. The Adaptive features are nice, but inconsistent and require some management to get the best results.
