Nokia to have Intel inside?

Is Nokia about to start selling smartphones with Intel chips inside? Intel has made no bones about wanting to expand into the smartphone market and has recently announced details of its new Mooretwon chip. Is this chip about to get its biggest boost by getting official backing from the biggest smartphone company out there? Check out the facts after the jump..

Intel has been pushing to make a bigger impact with its Atom processor in the smartphone market. The Atom chip is a low power CPU that has found great success in the netbook market. To date its not been too successful in the smartphone market due to too much power consumption.

However, that could all be about to change. According to the story that popped up on Reuters network first thing this morning, Intel is about to announce something major and insiders at the company have pointed to Nokia becoming the latest manufacturer to carry Intel chips inside.

There is expected to be a major announcement today from Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and general manager of the company’s ultra mobility group that will hook Nokia up with Intel.

Intel plans to introduce a new and more power efficient version of its Atom CPU next year, code named Moorestown. Apparently, the new chip will deliver a 50x power reduction when idle and  will pack enough power to handle 720p video recording and 1080p quality playback. If this is true then the next gen of Nokia smartphones should be something to behold.

If this is the case, are we likely to see the first Nokia device using Intel chips announced today or is this merely a statement of intent? Then again, this brings us one step closer to the Nokia Netbook we’ve been hearing so much about! We’ll have to wait and see but if the rumour mongers are right, then again, we won’t have long to wait!
