Comes With Music: Building a library Kaiser Chiefs to Kiss

Comes With Music is Nokia’s own music subscription service that allows you to download as much music as you like for a year, or longer if you choose to extend the subscription.

With over six million tracks to choose from it’s a great way to build your own music library, which is something we’re putting to the test. Check out what the Letter K has to offer on Comes With Music.

Comes With Music has become a weekly mission in our house of late. The game seems to be who can find the band with the most albums that you can possibly download with the service. This isn’t a problem, as once you’ve signed up you can download as much as you like without penalty.

First up is the lady of the house has decided that a few more Britpop bands are in order, so has pulled together three of best selling indie bands in recent times: The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs and Keane.

The Kooks hail from Brighton and are one of those bands forever associated with ‘a scene’ – in this case, foppy hair and tight jeans. They’ve had two albums to date, Konk and Inside in/Inside Out and both are up for grabs on Comes With Music, so that’s an easy first win for the lady of the house,

Keane have had their ups and downs but seem to be riding high with their ‘difficult third album’ Perfect Symmetry. This is nabbed, along with their first album Hopes and Fears. A quick pause and a ponder over the rather dull Under the Iron Sea but it’s decided not to both.

Possibly the biggest inide band to come out of England in a while are Kaiser Chiefs. They are so big now they gather the same ‘laddish’ crowd as Oasis at gigs. Comes With Music has all the albums, from the first Employment, to Off with Their Heads and Yours Truly, Angry Mob.

The lady of the house is happy with her haul and hands over the Comes With Music netbook to the girl of the house, my 12-year old daughter. She’s been moaning for the last couple of days that she can’t think of any act she likes starting with the letter K. Then a moment of  inspiration hits and Kelis pops up. There is a fair choice of stuff to choose from single wise but daughter goes for The Hits, Kelis Was Here and Kaleidoscope as her choices.

Teenage boy usually likes his rock to come in the dark metal variety but for the letter K he’s been drawn to Kings of Leon and The Killers. Kings of Leon seem to be huge these days, even though they plough a rather steady furrow of indie. Youth and Young Manhood was their breakthrough album but boy also adds Only By the Night and Because of the Times.

The Killers are the Shed Seven ‘not’ from York but the west coast of the US but that doesn’t stop their first album, Hot Fuss, being the best Sheddoes album never made. Sam’s Town saw a change of direction that Sawdust and Day And Age has continued to follow, which is one of large stadium rock.

As if remembering his metal roots, suddenly Killswitch Engage pops up on the Comes With Music search engine. Apart from their cover version of Dio’s Holy Diver they’re a bit of an unknown quantity in our house, However, with Comes With Music posting all their albums to date, Teenage boy adds Alive or Just Breathing, As Daylight Dies and The End of Heartache to his download list.

When it comes to my turn, it seems I’m at a bit if a loss as when I type in Kiss, for a bit of old school Glam Rock, nothing pops up. This is where you need to have a bit of ingenuity or down right perseverance can come in handy. It seems Kiss haven’t been logged by band name but by album title! If you don’t find what you’re after at first go, try this method, it seems to work well as the entire back catalogue then pops up! In truth, Kiss haven’t been any good since the late 70’s, so we pop Alive II, Destroyer and Love Gun and call is quite enough, thank you!

My other choice, and a chance to reclaim a bit of cool, is The Kills, a two-piece who the bloke is more famous for being with Kate Moss than his record sales. Still, Keep on Your Mean Side, No Wow and Midnight Boom are on there and well worth picking up.

RANDOM TRACK: The beauty of Comes With Music is that you can experiment with new types of music, which is something we’ve been trying with a degree of success. K has brought us to the Kids section of Comes With Music and the Editor’s Pick which this week is The Wiggles and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing. The Wiggles seem to be four men with guitars and bizarre grins stuck to their faces – this may be more painful than ‘getting to know techno’ but we’re downloading to give it a go!

There were so many good bands listed above… The kooks are amazing and I’m so happy that they’re finally getting the recognition that they deserve here in the United States. Kings of Leon and Keane are also fantastic bands. I’m so happy that they’re a part of Nokia’s Comes with Music.
