Guitar Rock Tour on Nokia 5800 review
Guitar Hero is one of those games that allows the secret musician inside you to escape for a while and pretend you’re on tour with some evil Rawk band, shredding the licks and laying waste to famous songs the world over. Guitar Rock Tour follows the same lines but instead of a guitar you use the touchscreen display on your Nokia 5800. Want to know how well we rock? So, you want to play guitar like a legend? As everyone knows, you’ve got to pay your dues before you get to pay the rent, and so it is with Guitar Rock Tour. This is a game that makes the most of the touchscreen on the Nokia 5800 and even comes bundled free with the Nokia 5800 Comes With Music on Orange.
The game itself works by individual notes coming down a virtual fretboard and when it reaches the end you tap the screen. Miss the note and your part of the song stops playing. Miss multiple notes and the crowd will start to turn ugly and boo you off the stage.
It’s this instant response that gives the game its edge, it forces you to get better or face the consequences. The game has a total of 51 levels over three levels of difficulty and while it starts out quite simple, you’ll find it does soon ramp up.
With eight songs to learn and play, including Message in a Bottle, Banquet, Heart-Shaped Box and Smoke on the Water, there is enough here to keep you finger picking for a while. That said, don’t expect the music to be the actual songs, as they sound a little too much like Frank Sidebottom playing along with his Timperly Big band. In other words, you get the idea it’s the song but that’s about it.
Guitar Rock Tour is a great way to use the Nokia 5800 touchscreen but we’re not convinced the game is going to help you improve your guitar skills. Still, for £3, it’s worth a dabble and means there is finally a reason to use the guitar pick that ships with the Nokia 5800!
