Watch BBC iPlayer on your Nokia N95 8GB and Nokia E71

It only seems like yesterday we were watching BBC iPlayer on the Nokia N97 but today we can bring you news that the BBC in its wisdom has decided to switch the service on for other Nokia phones, namely the Nokia N95 8GB and even the Nokia E71. That’s right, it’s now possible to watch BBC iPlayer on your Nokia N95 8GB, find out more after the jump…

Haven’t we always been able to watch BBC iPlayer on the Nokia N95? That was the first thing we thought when we saw the BBC was promoting the service as part of it’s Mobile Day.

However, when BBC iPlayer was first introduced for the Nokia N96 it was indeed possible to install and set it up on the Nokia N95 and even the Nokia E71. However, a software upgrade to the service soon put an end to that, as it prevented those users who’d set it up to gain access.

Thankfully, this has now been resolved and the Beeb has created a dedicated Nokia N95 version that can be downloaded from the BBC iPlayer Mobile site. While we have to wonder why it took nine months to make it open to the Nokia N95 8GB, we should be happy it’s here at all!

This latest version offers everything we’ve come to expect including live TV and radio. You can catch up on seven days worth of TV, so you never need miss anything on the Beeb ever again.

That’s the good news but there is a catch. The full service will work on all the handsets over a Wi-Fi connection but at the moment only those using their Nokia on either 3 or Vodafone will be able to watch TV using the 3G connection. The BBC expects they’ll be able to roll this service out to other networks over time. At the moment, if you try running iPlayer over 3G and you’re not on 3 or Vodafone, a sign will pop up asking you to switch to Wi-Fi.

If you want to start watching BBC iPlayer on your Nokia you’ll need to download the latest widget – point your browser at www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer and follow the onscreen instructions.

I can download the iplayer and it seems to be working until i try to start a programme and then it goes to ‘buffering’ but takes ages without starting and then says ‘Error opening media, general timeout’ & never starts the programme. Do i have some settings wrong or something?! ‘Tis very annoying! Any ideas? Thanks

I have the exactly same problem Cath!
My Nokia E71 works with the iplayer over 3G but always time’s out when over WiFi. Same error message as you. I cant see why this should be happenning. Did you have any luck with it? If I find an answer I will post here.

I had the same problem on my N95. Seems I had once set the Realplayer connection options (In Tools->Settings->Applications->RealPlayer) to use 3G connection. In the Streaming settings, turn the proxy off, and set your default Network to be your Wifi

I have the same problem over WiFi. My RealPlayer settings were proxy-off anyway.
