Nokia Netbook OS leaked

The idea of a Nokia Netbook seems to run hot and cold but it seems some form of connected device is in the works. At least, this would seem the case as screenshots of what could well be a Nokia Netbook OS have started to circulate.

The screenshot shows a wholly new OS being used not only for future Nokia phones but on future internet tablets or Netbooks too. See what you think after the break…

Is a Nokia Netbook in the works and is this screengrab proof that it will have it’s own dedicated OS?

The screenshot has been leaked onto the internet by MobileCrunch, who apparently had word from an inside source that Nokia is working full tilt on a new version of its internet tablet operating. This new OS is currently known as Maemo but there seems to be a second version in the works that is intended for phones – this version has a code name of Maemo Harmattan.

The source suggests that Maemo Harmattan is part of a strategy to phase out the S60 OS on future Nokia smartphones. With Maemo primarily intended for some future internet tablet, this would seem it would lend itself wholeheartedly to a Nokia Netbook with full 3G connectivity!

On the screenshot that MobileCrunch has published, only the top bit in blue would appear at any one time on your Nokia smartphone, so you’d scroll up and down your Home page. Sure, this works perfectly for touchscreen phones but with a little tweaking, maybe this same approach will be used for the Nokia Netbook interface?

The report goes on to state that Maemo Harmattan won’t be going public until late 2010, so there is plenty of time for this to change into something completely different. What do you think, is this the OS for a future Nokia Netbook, or something else entirely?
