Another Nokia Netbook on the way?

Tags: netbook, Nokia

It seems the rise of the Nokia Netbook continues apace with news that a new player for the contract to build it for Nokia has been found.

Last week it was thought that OEM manufacturer Foxconn was about sign a contract with Nokia to make the first Nokia Netbook. However, according to one source, it seems there is now another player in town. The story of the Nokia Netbook seems to get messier by the week, check it out after the jump…

When we first raised the idea of a Nokia Netbok we didn’t think it would catch on quite as quickly as it has. Sure, it was helped by Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo mentioning in an interview on Finnish TV that it would get into the mobile computer business at some point in the future to make the story legitimate.

Last week we brought you news that Foxconn was about to sign the contract to make the Nokia Netbook a reality. However, it seems that Elite Computer Systems (ECS) another big OEM company based in Tiawan is in discussions thr contract.

The news comes from China-based Economic Daily News, which hints that negotiations are in full swing and we could well see something official by the end of this year.

Now, what seems interesting about this news, and that of the Foxconn getting involved, is that it would suggest that Nokia is looking for an off-the-shelf solution rather than something a little more bespoke. Both companies can offer a full bespoke service but they’re better known for creating OEM deals.

Does that mean we’re looking at Nokia simply dabbling in the netbook market rather than wanting to be a serious contender?

While it’s likely that we’ll see the Nokia Netbook emerge at some point, we don’t think a simple re-badge is likely to happen, do you?
