Nokia N97 price ‘outrageous’ says Nokia

Tags: N97, Nokia

Have you been tempted to pre-order yourself a Nokia N97 with a certain online retailer yet? Well, if we were you, we’d hang-fire on splashing the cash just yet as we’ve just been informed by our Nokia contact that the pricing is well off-the-scale, or simply ‘outrageous‘ as they put it.

There is good news, though, as it seems the date may well be ‘close’ to being right. Read on for the full details of the Nokia N97…

We reported earlier that Expansys had posted up what it believes to be the street date and onsale price of the forthcoming Nokia N97 smartphone. Well, it seems the site is seriously wide of the mark when it comes to pricing, and even has the date wrong.

How do we know? Well, we’ve been in touch with Nokia only to find out that the price is simply ‘outrageous‘. Expansys has a price of £689.99 (inc. VAT), which in these credit crunch times simply isn’t going to happen. Nokia is staying quiet as to the true price but we’re expecting it to be a lot less.

One thing that Expansys has got nearly right is that it will be a June release, but there is no official confirmation as to whether it’ll be the 23rd. However, we already knew it would be June, as Nokia made it clear when the N97 would ship as part of its announcements during the recent Mobile World Congress.

So there you go, we still need to wait on an official date but it seems we won’t have to spend as much as current claims would have it to get our hands on the new flasghip Nok.

Still not decided on whether the Nokia N97 is the one worth waiting for? Check out our guide to all things N97 related and even how it stacks up against our current fav, the Nokia 5800.

Anyone who’d buy ANYTHING from Expansys has to be CRAZY! If Nokia is saying the price is too high then WHY would anyone shop at this company???

I have been holidng out for this phone since the rumours of its release in Dec 08. Now its just not viable to wait till end of June 09. Nokias always have been more expensive than competitors phones but £700 for a phone is just way to over the top, its spec isnt that ground breaking.

Nokia said it would be around 550 Euros, so it’s not going to be anywhere neat £700 when it finally comes out.

This is outrageously priced. 37000 is too much man. Look at Nokia 5800 xpress music(http://www.iphonekiller.com/2009/02/14/nokia-5800-full-specifications), its at 19000 Rs but gives you almost everything other that physical qwerty it has on-screen qwerty and used the same Symbiam S60 v 5 OS. You dont really need 5 MP camera, 3.5 is more than sufficient and delivers extremely crisp pics and videos.
I am not burning 37000 in times of recession…come on Nokia India what happened to your market sense, you could have sold billions of sets had you priced it reasonably. This is just an ounce better that Nokia 5800 (Uses the same OS – Symbian S60v5), so price shouldnt be more than 25K

a 5 megapixel camera is just too extravagant for a phone, if i were to have a nokia n97, i’d probably use a lower resolution as a default for my camera. u can always switch back to a 5 megapixel setting if the situation deems it necessary. the phone is simply awesome, everthing i want in a handset. can anyone give it to me? haha. =)
