It seems the notion of a Nokia Netbook, or even a Nokia notebook, may not be too far away judging from an interview with Nokia Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo on Finnish national broadcaster YLE on Wednesday.

‘We are looking very actively also at this opportunity,’ Kallasvuo said, when asked about Nokia’s plans to start making notebooks.

Is this mere speculation, or are we on the verge of a bit announcement?

Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo was interviewed on Finnish national broadcaster YLE yesterday about a wide range of topics but the one that caught the imagination of everyone watching  was when the conversation turned to the future of mobile computing and how Nokia fitted into it.

Kallasvuo stated that the line between the phone industry and the Mobile PC business is blurring, with many of the devices sharing similar themes. He went on to say, ‘We don’t have to look even for five years from now to see that what we know as a cellphone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging,’

This is as clear an indication as any that Nokia is looking at expanding its core business, and something we hinted at a few weeks ago with the Nokia Netbook. We even thought it stood a chance of being launched at MWC but from what is being rumoured, we’re still a while away from seeing the Nokia Netbook as a reality.

We’ve been thinking that the most obvious start for Nokia would be with a Netbook, as this low-cost PC is potentially the one that works best with their current business model – it’s smart, light and is increasingly being seen as a revenue stream for telcos.

So, is Nokia about to launch a line of laptops? Nok out a Nokia Netbook or simple see how the market rolls? Clearly it’s early days yet but could we be on the verge of a new Nokia model range?
