Nokia Locate Sensor gets discovered
Ever had one of those mornings where you can’t find your keys, your wallet or even your favourite Nok? Yup, we’ve all been there and so it seems have the research guys over at Nokia. How do we know this? Well, they’ve just announced details of a handy service called Nokia Locate Sensor, which they’ve been cooking up in the labs.
Basically, it’s a small wireless location tag you attach to your most lose-ables, such as your keys. Later, when it comes time to find them in the dark or the morning rush to get out of the house, you use the accompanying Nokia Locate Sensor app on your phone to point you in the exact direction of the item. What’s more, it’ll even tell you how far away it is, so you don’t end up playing a game of ‘cold-warmer-hot’.
If that’s not enough for you, you can also set Nokia Locate Sensor to alert you should you accidentally drop something, like your wallet. It works in an area up to 100 metres away from your phone, so offers a wide enough location area to make it ideal for the office as well as the home.
At the moment the tag is a little green blob roughly the size of a Secure Digital (SD) card but the idea is that it will be made in a variety of sizes and shapes. This way it can readily be attached to all manner of devices. Along with the sensor, it also packs in a battery that will last for up to 18 months at the moment, but this can be made to last longer simply by making a bigger tag package.
The final twist on this quirky device is that you can set it to find your Nok. If you have a tag on you but you’ve put your phone down and can’t remember where, as long as you’re within 3 metres of it the tag will alert you to its presence.
It’s still in the development stage, no doubt to make the whole design smaller and more power efficient still, and there is no word whether it will ever be released. However, we’ll definitely be keeping tabs on this one for further reference.
