N96 DIY battery upgrade for longer life

If you’re worried about your N96 conking out on you halfway through the day because you’ve been watching iPlayer on it all day, fear not as there’s relatively simply way to boost its battery life.

Vaibhav Sharma, over at The Symbian Blog has discovered that it’s possible to use a higher capacity battery without any physical modifications, so you get extras juice without piling on the pounds.

The standard N96 battery is a 950 mAh version, while the N78 comes with a 1200 mAh model instead. However, with a little pushing and shoving it’s possible to get the N96 to take the higher capacity battery.

Of course, if you do this and something goes wrong with your handset, you’re probably on your own in terms of warranty as it’s not officially sanctioned.

Sharma does admit that it does bulge ever so slightly, but it’s really not that noticeable and more than makes up for the extra usage. He’s even put together a short video to show it in action:
