Comes with Music, building a library part 2
I only have one track from the great composer, Bach, but it’s still worth a look on Comes with Music as a little bit of classical music is always worth having, plus it’ll give me a chance to check out a whole other category on the service. There’s nothing like learning and I’ve just learned that Bach never actually released an album – I think all that happened long after he moved on. Still, 15 singles are on offer, but no sign of my copy of Sarabande from French Suits No 5. Undeterred, a quick track search finds it, without any sign of the great man himself. Still.
Band Aid throws up an odd problem. I have both versions, the original 1984 and the newer 2004 re-record. My first search for “Do they know it’s Christmas?” left me wondering which of the four search results was which. Playing the sample of each before downloading is a pain, frankly. Searching Band Aid though shed some light and armed with both versions it’s onto legendary crooner, Barry White.
Bazza, as I like to call him, put out a great album a while back featuring all his best hits. The Collection isn’t available on Comes with Music, but there’s at least 15 other Barry White albums to choose from. I’ve picked the 30 track 3-CD Collection which I’m sure will cover most ground. Curiously, “Just for You” and “The Best of Barry White” aren’t available to download on Comes with Music despite being listed.
One of the first albums I ever owned was Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys, which I’ve since added to with Beastie Boys Anthology, Hello Nasty, Paul’s Boutique (their finest ever) and To the 5 Boroughs. With the exception of the original and Beastie Boys Anthology, none of the others are on offer at Comes with Music. However, Solid Gold Hits, The Mix Up (both with and without bonus tracks) and Maximum Beastie Boys all make up for the gaps providing as they do a total of 105 Beastie Boys tracks. And yes, I now have them all.
As I said the other day, part of my iTunes collection has been populated by my wife and the two Beautiful South records are both hers. Both Carry on up the Charts and Welcome to The Beautiful South are available n Comes with Music along with pretty much every track they’ve recorded. I’ve added The BBC sessions and The Beautiful South – Gold for comprehensiveness, coming as they do with 27 and 36 tracks each.
The box says Comes with Music, not Comes with Comedy, but given that you can get Bill Hicks on iTunes, what about CwM? Oh yes. Everything (almost). Rant in E-Minor, Oxford Union, Dangerous, Relentless, Love Laughter and Truth, The Best of and Flying Saucer Tour No 1 offer a good spread but, and it’s a pretty big but for die-hard Hicks fans – no Arizona Bay. What gives? Still, I’ve bolstered my dead comedian quotient considerably. God Speed, Bill.
The Black Family were brought in by my Mrs, but I’ve since become quite partial to them. They’re Irish (which instantly makes them good IMHO) but a bit specialist and unless you’re Irish or German, you’re unlikely to have heard of them. It’s now pretty clear that Comes with Music is neither Irish nor German – it’s not heard of them. Shame, they’re quite good.
About five years ago, towards the end of brit pop, I lived right next door to Daman Albarn in Notting Hill (or North Kensington, as it’s officially known). I was already a fan then, with Leisure and Parklife propping up my collection, and I guess I still am now. Every now and then I have a little listen. Comes with Music offers a decent range, but Parklife is absurdly absent. The title track is as close to a national anthem as the 1990s ever got and the album is missing. It’d be unforgivable if it weren’t for the Blur album, The Best of, Modern Life is Rubbish and Think Tank. There are a few others as well, which I’m going to leave for now, including Bustin’ and Dronin’ The Great Escape and 13.
Everybody goes through a Frank Sinatra phase but its only the slightly geeky who take it a bit further and step into the world of Bobby Darin. I picked up a 3-CD copy of the Capitol Years a while back and I have to admit it was absolute rubbish. When I get home was much better, though Mack the Knife is my favourite. 34 Bobby Darin albums are on Comes with Music. Thirty. Four. I’m not having all of them so after a quick scan I pick Live from the Desert Inn and For Teenagers Only – even though it’s been a long time since I was a teenager.
This is 100 per cent true, but only a few weeks ago (I’m sure I was drunk) I bought Womanizer by Britney Spears. The video version. I do actually like it, and do you know, it features the 5800 XpressMusic? With a classic close up taking the piss out of its very appearance (see the shot above). Shockingly, given the association in the video, the single isn’t available on Comes with Music. Dumbster!
So I’ve made it through B, largely unscathed. There were a few tricky ones splattered about but Comes with Music dealt with it well. I’m still impressed with the range on offer, but can’t help but feel occasionally let down by the holes. So what would I prefer, to have access to that much music or pay more to get less? I’m still preferring the range on offer so it’s still thumbs up for Comes with Music. Five of the seven artists starting with C in my iTunes collection are Irish. Given CwM’s previous on Irish artists, it’ll be interesting to see how it fairs tomorrow. Here’s hoping.
