We’ve been sorting the wheat from the chaff at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London today, and come across some exciting new technology which will let you play HD video on your handset.

ARM, which currently provides processors for Nokia Nseries phones, was showing off its Cortex A8 CPU, which renders HD video up to 720p via built in hardware, requiring just 1 watt of power consumption.

While most phones don’t have HD resolutions, it does offer a cheap and practical way to display hi-res video on a TV via output. It’s not confirmed for any phones yet, but given it’s already in use in Archos’ Jukebox PMPs, here’s hoping we’ll be seeing this incorporated in new models very soon.
