Crazy rumour: Nokia building Zune phone for Microsoft

Nokia has apparently been getting chummy with the Zune folks over at Microsoft, in an effort to bring their devices closer together. As part of Microsoft’s efforts to stop the iPod juggernaut, it’s apparently looking at licensing Zune content across multiple mobile devices and as a result Nokia is now its new best friend.

The word is that Nokia is working with the team at Microsoft to integrate Zune Marketplace content into its handsets. Whether this would result in Nokia Music Store merging with Zune Marketplace, or just ensure compatibility no matter where you bought your music is unsure.

In addition to Nokia devices, Microsoft is also looking at bundling Zune shaped features into its own Windows Mobile OS. According to the (no doubt unpopular) source at Microsoft, there are no plans for a specific Zune phone, instead Microsoft is planning to fight this battle in software instead.
