With big plans already in the pipeline for Symbian, what with Nokia’s proposal to buy up all the shares and then give the software away royalty free, it now looks like its collaborations with Google could include enhancements to the core OS according to comments by its chief exec.

“We already work together and so whatever collaboration, if there is an opportunity, we will be happy to collaborate with them,” Symbian chief executive Nigel Clifford told Reuters. “And that could be on the application level or that could be on the more fundamental operating system level.”

With Android in the works, it’s unclear how exactly any operating system level collaborations would work but at least the two aren’t ruling anything out. It’s unlikely to result in some sort of S60/Android hybrid, but then stranger things have happened.

Google already offers some custom apps for Symbian, such as integrating with Nokia Search and providing its own S60 search app. Anything that brings the two closer together and means more goodies to play with is a good thing in our book.
