Only 3 percent recycle old mobiles

What do you do when you get a brand new shiny handset? According to Nokia’s research, you’re most likely to dump your old one in a draw, forget about it and go off to play with your new toy. Instead, your old model could be easily recycled, which is much better for your gadget fuelled environmental guilt.

Nokia has tapped up 6,500 people across the world from Finland and China to Russia and the UK to find out what they think about recycling old mobiles. Luckily only 4 percent end up as landfill, which is something, but the majority – 44 percent – are just sat around doing nothing. Some are put back to good use – a quarter are passed on to family and friends while 16 percent end up in emerging markets.

Globally, only a quarter of consumers actually thought about recycling their phone, despite 72 percent agreeing that recycling makes a difference to the environment. Now Nokia has made it easier than ever to recycle your old handset – just head on over to the Nokia we:recycle site to find your nearest drop off point. If you’re intrigued to see what’s next for your old faithful, then here’s handy video courtesy of Nokia Conversations.
