Software: Psiloc Connect
Rating: 5

In a nutshell…

Automatically selects your Nok’s best possible connection for data transfer.

What’s it good for?

Saving you quids on your 3G phone’s bill by using Wi-Fi by default if possible.

Judgement time…

Psiloc Connect is one of the simplest apps we’ve ever used. Essentially, it ensures your phone is always using the best connection possible. The philosophy is “one access point to rule them all”: open up your Nok’s list of access points and you’ll see Psiloc Connect listed alongside the regulars. Choose this and Connect does the rest. If you’re within range of several Wi-Fi hotspots, it’ll choose the fastest known one and automatically connect to it. Not only that, it’ll switch seamlessly to a quicker hotspot when necessary, saving you the trouble of having to check the speed then connect yourself.

If there are no Wi-Fi access points in range, it’ll use the fastest 3G or GSM access point – so you’re only paying for data if it’s absolutely necessary. Alternatively, you can tell it never to use 3G/GSM – handy if you’re abroad and want to avoid those ludicrous roaming charges.

In an ideal world, you wouldn’t need an application like this: your phone would come with the ability to select the best connection built in (Nokia, get onto it!). But we don’t live in an ideal world, so if you don’t have an unlimited data plan but find yourself web-surfing and downloading regularly, this is a top, top tool that will probably save you a fair bit of cash. And it’s cheap to boot!
