How to wirelessly sync your Nok with your Mac
Got an Apple Mac and having trouble getting it to buddy up with your Nokia? Well, never fear: getting the two synced for contacts, calendar entries and photo transfers is an absolute piece of cake. Read on and we’ll have you sorted in a matter of minutes.
What you’ll need:
iSync
An iSync plug-in for your phone (if necessary)
iPhoto
A USB cable
Step by step:
1. Update your Mac
Open up the Software Update application on your Mac and make sure OS X is up to date. You’ll need version Mac OS X 10.4.9 or higher for iSync to get chummy with your Nok. iSync itself should already be installed.
2. Do you need a plug-in?
Some Nokia handsets need a plug-in to work with iSync, while some don’t. Head over to the Nokia iSync page and check your particular phone model against the list. If you need the plug-in, download it, ensure iSync isn’t running, then double-click the downloaded plug-in to get it installed.
3. Start up iSync
Right, now iSync is ready for your Nok. Fire up the app from the Finder’s Applications section, then select Devices > Add Device. If your Mac uses Bluetooth (most newer models do) you should be able to perform a scan, detect your phone and follow the Bluetooth Setup Assistant’s prompts to get the two devices paired up wirelessly. Make sure you tick the box which sets up iSync to transfer contacts and events.
4. Get syncing!
Now the Mac and your Nokia are paired, click the “Sync Devices” icon in iSync. Your phone will ask for confirmation, so allow the connection and sit back and marvel as your contacts list and calendars are synchronised in a matter of seconds! Now you can edit contacts using Address Book on your Mac, plus keep the calendar up to date using iCal – which is much easier than piddling about inputting the data on your phone’s tiny keys.
5. Got photos?
iPhoto is also compatible with certain Noks, allowing you to transfer all your phone’s photos across to your Mac in one click. Sadly, we can’t get this working over Bluetooth, so you’ll need a USB cable for this: connect your Nok and Mac, select Data Transfer and iPhoto should automatically kick into life, displaying your mobile’s photographic contents. Simply click “Import All” and everything will be transferred over in a juiffy. Simple as.
