Top Ten: the week’s biggest stories!

As another week heads towards endsville, it’s once again time for us to bring you the ten most earth-shaking Nok-related stories from NokNok and elsewhere on the web-o-sphere. Want to know what’s happened in the week that was? It’s all here, so dive in!

1. Nokia confirms touchscreen S60 this year

We’ve been bringing you snippets on the forthcoming touchscreen Tube phone and its all-new S60 Touch interface for months now, but we’ve never had a sniff of an official release date confirmation from Nokia – until now. Without getting too specific, the Nok has said that its first touchscreen S60 products will be launched before 2008 is out. Huzzah!

2. Nokia lets Step Counter out of the labs for a run around

Want to know how far you’ve slogged in a day? Then download Nokia Beta Labs’ new Step Counter app, which uses the accelerometer in the N95, N95 8GB or N82 to tot up your trudges, determine the distance travelled and the amount of energy you’ve burnt off.

3. More Beta Labs goodness: Nokia Music PC app

Now the Beta Labs chaps and chapettes have gone and taken on iTunes! This new bit of PC software makes short, easy work of syncing your digital music collection with your phone.

4. Nokia Maps gets sharey on Ovi

Nokia’s Ovi web service is getting prepped for some Maps-lovin’, with the ability to plan routes on your PC then sync them with your phone the highlight. Look out for it in September.

5. Nokia invites the public to test drive its phones

Nokia’s Test Pilot scheme invites six lucky My Nokia users each month to give its new mobiles a thorough long-term test (and usually lets them keep the handset afterwards). Click through for more info.

6. Ovi Share gets geotagging

All About Symbian reveals that from now on any photos you upload to Ovi Share will be checked for location data, and plotted on a map if they have it. Nice.

7. Could it be curtains for N93-style handsets?

According to Symbian Freak, rumours abound that the flip-and-swivel design used on the N90, N92 and N93 is being dropped by the Nok – meaning we’ll never see a phone transforming into a nifty pistol-grip camcorder again. A minute’s silence for its passing, please.

8. Panoman: take panoramic photos on your Nok

Over on the Nokia N82 Blog they’ve uncovered an app that makes taking panoramic shots a cinch. There’s a link to a full review if you click through to read the story.

9. Nokia Communication Center updated

It’s only been out for a few days, but thanks to user feedback Nokia Beta Labs have already released an update for Communication Center.

10. Nokia planning GPS for 50 percent of its handsets

At least that’s what Gizmodo is reporting! Apparently, by 2010-2012 we could see as much as half of the Nok’s phone line-up equipped with built-in GPS.
