How to prepare your N95 for a summer holiday

Huzzah! The weather has finally turned, the days are getting longer and summer is fast approaching – so many of you will be soon be leaving the daily troubles of work behind and embarking on two weeks of sun, sand and moderate alcohol consumption. Of course, your Nokia N95 will be heading out with you, so we thought now would be the perfect time to show you how to get it cocked, locked and ready to rock, summer holiday style!

What you’ll need…

Peli 1010 Micro Case

Solio solar charger with N95 adapter

Anti-Mosquito software

SanDisk 2GB micro SD card

Skype for Mobile software

How to get hol-ready…

Waterproof your Nok

If you’re going to be lounging by the pool or on the beach it’s definitely best to keep your N95 waterproofed – even if you’re not plunging in the wet stuff yourself there’s every chance a stray splash could cover your beloved blower in electronics-killing H2O. Luckily there’s a simple way to protect it: Peli’s 1010 Micro Case is just the right size to enclose an N95 (or any similar sized handset) in a transparent watertight sarcophagus. It even comes with a lanyard to make it easier to carry it about.

Think power

This is an obvious one, but if you’re heading to foreign climes you’re going to need a power adapter to keep your phone charged. You also might want to pack a Solio solar charger, which tops up the juice ultra-eco style using the rays of the sun, and folds down to a bag-friendly size. And don’t forget to get the N95 cable tip adapter for it too.

Get mosquitoes to buzz off

Summer holidays in hot places often means being under near-constant attack from mozzies, but your multitalented N95 can even help you out here. Install Anti Mosquito and it’ll make the N95 emit a high-pitched whine that’ll have the airborne annoyances turning tail and fleeing. Yes, really.

Turn your N95 into a music machine

Keep yourself entertained during those long coach/train/plane journeys with a wee bit of music. The N95 is nicely kitted out for playing back your tunes – it’s got a proper 3.5mm headphone socket and classy media player software – but it’s decidedly lacking in storage space (unless you’ve got an N95 8GB, natch). Remedy this deficiency by splashing out on a 2GB microSD card (the largest capacity supported), which means space for about 500 tracks at high quality: Play.com sells one for £6.99.

Gear up for photo geotagging

If you’re planning on taking holiday snaps with the N95’s stonking 5-megapixel camera make sure you add geotags to all your shots. That way in years to come you’ll never forget exactly where you took them – because you’ll be able to check out their precise location on Google Maps! Check last week’s geotagging tutorial for all the details of what you need: How to view your geotagged photos on Google Maps.

Sidestep those exorbitant roaming charges

Want to call home while you’re away, but don’t fancy footing the ludicrous bill from your provider? No probs, amigo: now that Skype is out, you can use the N95’s Wi-Fi skills to phone almost anywhere for a pittance. Check out our review here: Skype for Mobile (beta).
