How to view your geotagged photos on Google Maps

If you’re an N95 or N82 user you may already be geotagging your snaps up a treat – but there’s not much point in branding photos with location info if you can’t view them on a map later, is there? Well, read on and we’ll show you how to do just that…

What you’ll need…

N95, N95 8GB or N82

Nokia Location Tagger

ShoZu

A Flickr account

Step-by-step

Step 1: The ShoZu must go on!

Okay, first thing’s first. You need to grab a free app called ShoZu, which allows you to upload photos direct from your phone to sharing websites like Flickr, Facebook, Picasa and so on. So head on over to the ShoZu website, download the software and install it on your phone (you can download it direct to your mobile if you point your browser at m.shozu.com). You’ll then have to go through a pretty straightforward setup process (username, password etc.), which shouldn’t take more than five or ten minutes.

Step 2: Got Flickr?

You’ll also need a Flickr account. Not heard of Flickr? Well, it’s a web service that allows you to upload and share photos and videos. Yep, we know there are loads of similar services out there, but we like Flickr because it’s brilliantly easy to use – both for the uploader and anybody viewing files. Another reason Flickr is vital is that it’s compatible with geotagged photos. So point your computer’s browser at the Flickr site and sign up (there’s no need to download any software – huzzah!).

Step 3: Link ‘em up

Now you need to pair up your ShoZu and Flickr accounts. Open up ShoZu from your phone’s applications screen, select “Add sites” and then choose Flickr. Follow the steps on your Flickr page to confirm the link-up.

Step 4: Fire up Location Tagger

You’re almost ready to start taking snaps, but first you need to make sure your phone GPS is working properly. You can fire up a number of apps to get it up and running, but Nokia’s own Location Tagger is one of the simplest, and comes with the added bonus of an in-camera indicator that lets you know when your Nok has a proper satellite fix. So if you don’t already have it running on your mobile, download Location Tagger, install it and get it up and running.

Step 5: Photo time

Now for the fun bit. Head off and start taking snaps (outside, obviously, otherwise you’ll lose your GPS data). You’ll know when a photo has been geotagged, as a couple of seconds after the shutter clicks you’ll get a message in your camera app.

Step 6: Upload

After you’ve finished going all Ansel Adams, it’s time to upload your glorious works to Flickr. Open the ShoZu app, select Flickr and either hit the “Send to Flickr” option to conveniently shift all your shots over in one go, or go through them individually and select “Send” on the ones you want to upload. Oh, and get on a Wi-Fi hotspot if you can, as those data charges are going to rack up otherwise.

Step 7: Check them out

If everything’s gone well your photos should be on your Flickr account. Open it up on your computer and make sure they’re all geotagged (there should be a tag, plus a “Taken in…” entry under Additional Information), then select “You” in the top bar and “Your Map” in the drop-down menu – you should then see your photos as clickable pink dots on a map!

Step 8: View them in Google Maps

This is an optional step, but we reckon the photos look better in Google Maps. To view them there right-click and save the geoFeed link at the bottom of your Flickr photostream page, then paste it into the search box in Google Maps. Now sit back and marvel at your works, clicking on each dot to view the relevant photo – genius!
