Full-fat Skype swoops onto your Nok

It’s been a long wait but a native mobile Skype app has finally peeked its head over the horizon. Of course, the planets biggest VoIP outfit has dabbled in the mobile arts before with its dedicated 3 Skypephone and 3’s X-series range and cheeky apps for, (cough) Windows Mobile smartphones and the Nokia N800/N810, but never has it stood alone in its all is VoIP mobile glory. Until now.

Symbian Freak first caught wind of Skype rolling out a very vanilla Beta version of its mobile app. Symbian nuts might be disappointed to hear its Java based and not native S60 but we’ve been kicking our heals of so long, frankly we’re not fussed so long as it works and does the business.

It works over a 3G connection so you can make calls free to fellow Skypians anytime, anywhere, although it will include a data charge, Skype is quoting “a person with 20 contacts, who’s online for 1 hour, IMs for 10 minutes and has a 20 minute call each day will use about 1MB of data per month.” It could become pricey for serial Skype users, so an all-you-can-eat data tariff is obviously preferable.

And by the looks of it you can also chat IM style and its compatible on over 50 of the most popular handsets including 14 Nokia blowers (the N95 and N80 are both covered). If you want to see for yourself and finally taste Skype on your mobile, just download the app.

We’ll be putting it through its paces shortly and bringing you our first verdict shortly, so watch this space.
