What is it?

Super simple internet radio on your mobile.

What’s it good for?

Listening to stations from around the world, and using your mobile as a proper internet radio.

Judgement time…

Mobile internet radio used to be a rare treat, but since Spodtronic and Nokia both waded in with their own software, the floodgates have opened. PocketStreamer’s one of the latest radio apps to barge onto our test phones, but what’s its unique selling point?

In a word, it’s simplicity. This is one of the least complicated apps we’ve ever seen, and it’s all the better for it. One touch tuning and a station library organised by genre make finding new music or radio programmes as simple as possible.

However, where simplicity is king, we can’t help missing a few more advanced features found in rival software.

For instance, PocketStreamer lacks the ability to mark stations as favourites. That means you’ll need to hunt for them each time you want to listen.

There’s also no way to add custom audio streams to its library. If the station you want isn’t listed, there’s nothing you can do about it.

Finally, there’s no added content. Where Spodtronic offers up on-demand concerts and podcasts, PocketStreamer just shrugs.

What’s more, you’ll end up paying more for the privilege of having fewer features – PocketStreamer costs a substantial amount, considering its limited functions, while both Spodtronic and Nokia’s internet radio software is available for free.

Overall PocketStreamer presents a nice premise, but in the face of free and fuller-featured competition, it’s not really a credible option.
