Nokia shape-shifting Morph phone…Tony Hart nowhere to be seen!

Like its 80s claymation kid’s telly namesake, Morph is a concept Nok that shape-shifts to suit its scenario. Nokia has unveiled this brilliantly brain-bending vision of the future at The Museum of Modern Art “Design and The Elastic Mind” exhibition. Hoverboards and self-tying sneakers at the ready people, phones are going sci-fi.

This isn’t some hairbrain concept cooked up by a group of rose-tinted interns either. No, teams from Nokia Research Centre and Cambridge Nanoscience Centre have put their Mekon-sized minds together to create this solar-powered, flexible, environment-scanning, transparent electronic super phone. Here’s a handset that could mould around your wrist, while checking air-polution and still lay the smackdown on iPhone in the style stakes.

According to Nokia all this stuff is possible too: “Fibril proteins are woven into a three dimensional mesh that reinforces thin elastic structures. Using the same principle behind spider silk, this elasticity enables the device to literally change shapes and configure itself to adapt to the task at hand.” Sounds plausible, or at least we love the idea of it. Lucky arachnids can’t patent their webby talents, or we’d all surely be stuck in the dark ages.

The Morph is also equipped with extra sci-fi skills including a self-cleaning touchscreen using “Nanoflowers”, a surface that naturally repels water, dirt, and even fingerprints!

No word on when such a concept could become a pocketable reality, nonetheless we’re still psyched at the prospect and will keep you posted on any developments.
