How to turn your N95 8GB into a home computer
Your N95’s so smart it can replace your desktop computer, with a few inexpensive add-ons. How? Here’s how…
Is it free?
You’ll need to buy a Bluetooth keyboard, but they’re pretty cheap.
Sold! How do I do it?
Step 1: The first thing you’ll need is a Bluetooth keyboard to pair up with your N95. They’re cheap, costing around £35. You’ll also need the TV-out cable that came with your phone.
Once you’ve got everything you need, click on ‘Office’ on your handset and choose ‘Wlss. Keybd.’ Turn on your keyboard and tap ‘Options’ followed by ‘Find keyboard’ on the N95. Once it’s found, you’ll be able to type properly using the keyboards for texts, e-mails, web addresses and even full-length documents.
If you plan to use the keyboard a lot, hit ‘Options’ and switch on ‘Application auto-start’ under the Wlss Keybd application to make your handset look for the keyboard whenever it’s in the vicinity.
Lastly, plug your TV-out cable into your TV’s yellow, red and white inputs, then plug the other end into your N95’s headphone socket. You’ll see your phone’s screen on the telly, and have a much easier time using it as a PC replacement.
Step 2: Once you’re up and running the real work can begin. To start churning ut office work, head to the ‘Office’ menu and tap Quickoffice to open Word, Excel or Powerpoint documents. To open PDF files, use the built in Adobe PDF viewer from the same menu.
Step 3: If you really want to show off, use SoonR to connect to your desktop PC at home. It’s great if you’re out and about, say at a hotel, as you can use the TV in your room to view files, or type an e-mail directly into your home PC’s e-mail application.
Step 4: Like to listen to music while you work? Use the N95‘s Music Player to blast MP3s from the TV’s speakers. They’ll be better quality than your phone, and the player will run happily in the background while you work. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to tune into radio, as the N95 needs to use earphones as its antenna.
Step 5: Once you’ve finished working, why not use the N95 as a games console? Most titles work well on a TV. Newer 3D games like System Rush or Snakes look best though. Try them out – it’s like having a games console with you 24-7!
